The Rise of CLI Coding Agents: Why Terminal-Native AI is Having a Moment

Nobody saw this coming. Twelve months ago the bet was that AI would live inside the IDE -- Cursor approaching $1B ARR, Copilot as the incumbent, visual editors winning. Then Anthropic shipped Claude Code, OpenAI shipped Codex CLI, Google shipped Gemini CLI, and developers ran back to the terminal.

I've been using CLI agents alongside my editor for most of this year. The shift isn't hype. It's that the terminal was always where real work happened, and the agent model fits there better than autocomplete ever fit the IDE.

The receipts: Claude Code now accounts for 4% of public GitHub commits -- roughly 135,000 per day -- projected to hit 20% by the end of 2026. Gemini CLI crossed 102K GitHub stars (up from 90K a month earlier). Codex CLI hit 62K. OpenCode, an independent tool, rocketed to 117K. Aider sits around 43.7K.

The IDE isn't dying. Cursor crossed $2B ARR. But the assumption that AI coding requires a visual editor? Dead.

Why the Terminal Won

1. Developers Already Live There

Any senior developer spends hours a day in the terminal -- running builds, managing git, deploying, tailing logs, ssh'ing into servers. Adding an agent there isn't a workflow change. It's a workflow extension.

Developers don't want an AI to replace their editor. They want an AI that works next to whatever editor they already use.

2. The Agent Model Fits the Terminal

IDE AI started as autocomplete -- predict the next line while you type. The terminal started as an agent -- run a multi-step job while you do something else.

The tasks that actually move the needle aren't line completions. They're:

  • "Refactor this module to use the new auth service"
  • "Find the bug causing intermittent 500s in the payment flow"
  • "Implement the feature in this spec across these 12 files"

Those are agent jobs. The terminal is a natural place to hand work off and watch it run.

3. No Editor Lock-In

Choosing Cursor means choosing a VS Code fork. If you prefer Neovim, Emacs, JetBrains, or Zed -- too bad. CLI agents don't care. Claude Code works with Vim. Aider works with Emacs. Codex CLI works with whatever you've got.

The top comment in the "Best Cursor Alternatives" thread (84 upvotes, 108 comments on r/cursor) was developers pairing Claude Code with Zed, Neovim, and VS Code interchangeably. The CLI agent is the constant; the editor is a choice.

4. Token Economics

IDE AI burns tokens in the background -- indexing, pre-fetching, maintaining completion models -- whether you use the output or not. Terminal agents are transactional. You ask, they work, you stop paying. Aider uses 4.2x fewer tokens than Claude Code on the same tasks. The gap between a CLI agent and an always-on IDE agent is larger still.

5. Composability

CLI tools compose. Pipe output, chain commands, run agents in tmux panes, trigger agents from scripts, embed them in CI. Claude Code's headless mode (-p) runs in any pipeline. Codex CLI's spawn_agents_on_csv runs multiple agents in parallel. Aider scripts over batches of files.

Try any of that with an IDE.

The Three Tribes

The category has split into three camps:

Vendor Agents: Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI

Tight integration with one model family. Best-in-class quality for that model. You're locked into one provider's pricing, rate limits, and roadmap.

  • Claude Code -- Highest code quality per community consensus, most expensive, usage limits are a real complaint. Default model is now Claude Opus 4.7 (April 16, 2026); the tokenizer change means the same text costs roughly 35% more at the same per-token rate.
  • Codex CLI -- Best token efficiency, strong terminal workflows, weak on frontend. The new $100/mo Pro tier (April 9, 2026) matched Claude Max -- that's two vendors admitting $20 is no longer the power-user tier. Codex Desktop (v26.415, April 16) ships background computer use, and 90+ proprietary plugins (Atlassian, CircleCI, GitLab, Figma, Notion) come in-box.
  • Gemini CLI -- Free tier is Flash-only since March 25 (Pro is paid-subscribers only). Ships faster than anyone: v0.35 through v0.38 landed between March 24 and April 17, 2026 (SandboxManager, Native Git Worktree, Context Compression, Chapters Narrative Flow, Persistent Policy Approvals). Reliability is still the main complaint.

Model-Agnostic Agents: Aider, OpenCode, Goose

Any model, any provider. No model-specific optimizations, so your output is only as good as the model you pick.

  • Aider -- Pioneer, best git integration, hosts the Polyglot leaderboard (which tests models through Aider, not Aider vs other tools). ~43.7K stars. v0.80-v0.82 (March 31 - April 14, 2026) added OpenRouter OAuth, Quasar-alpha (free via OpenRouter), GPT-4.1 mini/nano, and Grok-3.
  • OpenCode -- Fastest growing at 117K stars. Multi-interface (CLI + desktop + VS Code extension).
  • Goose -- Extensibility-focused, from Block. Smaller community, but the custom-extension story is real.

Hybrid Users

The pattern nobody writes about: people running multiple CLI agents for different jobs.

You can't easily run two IDEs. You can absolutely run two terminal agents.

What Changed for Developers

The skills that matter are different now:

  • Prompt engineering beats tab-completion habits
  • Context management -- knowing what to include and exclude -- is a core skill
  • Spec writing -- quality of instructions determines quality of output
  • Multi-agent orchestration -- knowing when to use which tool

The one-tool-does-everything era is over. Power users are assembling toolchains: Claude Code for architecture, Codex CLI for review and DevOps, Aider for cheap iteration, Gemini CLI for free prototyping, and a separate editor for reading code. This is just the Unix model applied to AI. Small, composable, specialized.

The IDE Isn't Dead, It's Optional

Cursor will keep growing. Copilot will keep shipping. But the default assumption -- that AI coding requires a specialized IDE -- is no longer true.

The terminal is proving that the best interface for an AI agent isn't a visual editor with inline diffs. It's a conversation with a tool that can read your codebase, edit your files, run your tests, and manage your git workflow -- from the same terminal where you already do everything else.

What Comes Next

Three things I'm watching:

  1. Multi-agent orchestration. Claude Code's Agent Teams, Codex CLI's spawn_agents_on_csv, Gemini CLI's Jules. Every major CLI agent will support parallel execution within a year.

  2. MCP as the interop standard. Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Goose, and Cline all support it. This is the USB-C moment for AI agents.

  3. Spec-driven workflows. The biggest pain point with every AI tool is "it didn't do what I meant." Better specs -- via CLAUDE.md, GEMINI.md, MCP servers, or tools like CodeMySpec -- address that directly. The spec becomes the unit of work; the agent is just the executor.
