AI IDEs Compared in 2026: Cursor vs Windsurf vs Zed vs Kiro
Introduction
If you're willing to throw out your code editor for better AI, you have four serious options in 2026. They don't agree on what "AI coding" means:
- Cursor is agent orchestration. As of Cursor 3 "Glass" (April 2), the editor is secondary to an Agents Window that runs up to 8 agents in parallel across local, worktree, cloud, and SSH.
- Windsurf is context-first. Flow awareness and deep reasoning over rapid iteration.
- Zed is performance-first. The fastest editor in the game, with AI as an optional layer.
- Kiro is spec-first. Writes zero code until you approve requirements, design, and task plan.
Three are VS Code forks (Cursor, Windsurf, Kiro). Zed is built from scratch in Rust. All four are betting AI-assisted coding is the future. They just disagree about what that looks like.
The last six weeks reshuffled the deck. Cursor 3 rebuilt the product around agent orchestration and doubled ARR to ~$2B. Windsurf raised Pro from $15 to $20/mo on March 19, ending the "Windsurf is cheaper" pitch for new users. Claude Opus 4.7 landed in Cursor, Windsurf, Kiro (experimental, 2.2x credit multiplier), and Zed (BYOK). Anthropic's April 4 third-party harness ban doesn't hit these IDEs directly -- they're all first-party Claude integrations -- but it's a signal that model vendors are walling up the edges.
The category is bifurcating. Cursor is repositioning as an agent orchestration dashboard. Zed and Kiro are staying closer to traditional IDE-with-AI. Windsurf is in the middle.

1. The Editor Foundation
Cursor, Windsurf, and Kiro are all VS Code forks. You get the extension ecosystem, familiar keybindings, and settings, plus VS Code's technical debt and a fragmentation risk that keeps growing. Microsoft started blocking certain extensions (C/C++ tooling) in forks via licensing enforcement in late 2025, and VS Code's native multi-agent support (Feb 2026) is closing the feature gap.
With Cursor 3, the "VS Code fork" frame barely matters anymore. The default workspace is the Agents Window. The editor is something agents open when they need it. Fork lineage is a footnote.
Zed is different. Built from scratch in Rust using its own GPU-rendering framework (GPUI). The payoff: 120fps rendering, 100K-line files load in 0.8 seconds vs 4.5s on Cursor and 6s on VS Code. Zed treats AI as an optional layer on top of a great editor. Connect Claude, Gemini, or local models. The spawn_agent tool enables sub-agents and parallel execution. The real bet is ACP, an open protocol for plugging in any third-party agent. Rather than building its own deep agent system, Zed is positioning as an agent control plane. In April, Zed added BYOK support for Claude's 1M context window (Opus and Sonnet) -- previously capped at 200K. Cursor leads on model flexibility inside a proprietary tool: Claude (Opus 4.7 live via the Claude provider since April 16), GPT-5, Gemini, and their own Composer, switchable per conversation. Kiro is Claude-only. Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 are GA. Opus 4.7 is experimental for a subset of paid users. No other model choice. Amazon is betting one excellent model family plus a great workflow beats model flexibility.
On benchmarks: the models behind these tools score differently depending on which benchmark and which scaffold. Scaffold choice alone can swing SWE-bench scores 10-22 points on the same model. Tool-level SWE-bench rankings don't exist -- CLI tools and IDEs haven't been submitted -- so any "X IDE is best at coding" claim is marketing.

Zed is the cheapest entry at $10/mo, or free if you BYO API key and skip Zed's AI features entirely.
The Windsurf price advantage is gone. Both are $20/mo at entry now, and Cursor's 20% annual discount ($16/mo Pro, $48/mo Pro+, $160/mo Ultra) actually makes Cursor cheaper on an annual plan. Grandfathered Windsurf subscribers at $15 keep the edge individually. New signups do not.
Windsurf's credit trap finally eased. The March shift replaced credits with quotas -- daily/weekly refreshes, unlimited Tab and inline edits on Pro. Cursor's Auto mode is unlimited and doesn't burn Pro credits, which addresses the #1 complaint from 2025. Credits still sting on premium models (multipliers on both) and on Kiro's experimental Opus 4.7 (2.2x).
Zed's billing is different: token-based at provider list price + 10%, with spending caps you control. More transparent, but you have to actually understand token economics to use it well.
5. Enterprise and Compliance
Windsurf crushes this category. SOC 2, HIPAA, FedRAMP, Zero Data Retention, ITAR. 350+ enterprise customers. This is still its clearest competitive advantage over Cursor.
Kiro is the AWS-native play: GovCloud (Feb 2026), IAM Identity Center, pursuing FedRAMP High, and AWS Transform for migrations (April 2026). If you're already on AWS, this is the path of least resistance.
Cursor has SOC 2 and Teams/Enterprise tiers but lags Windsurf on compliance depth. 60% of revenue comes from large corporate buyers. BugBot MCP for Teams and Enterprise shipped in April.
Zed is open source (GPL), so you can audit the code and self-host. Enterprise pricing exists. Compliance certifications aren't the priority.
6. Community and Ecosystem Health
Cursor has the strongest network effects: ~$2B ARR, the most tutorials, the biggest community, and 30+ partner plugins (Atlassian, Datadog, GitLab). It's the default recommendation in most coding communities. The Cursor 3 pivot is polarizing -- some users love the Agents Window, others find it a distraction from actually editing code -- but the ARR trajectory says the bet is paying off.
Windsurf 2.0 (April 15) answered the "is this thing getting killed?" question. Cognition unified Devin and Windsurf into one product, and the Agent Command Center's Kanban view of local and cloud agents is something no other IDE offers. The March pricing increase didn't go over well even with grandfathering, and SWE-1.5 locks you into Cascade's harness. Earlier Reddit sentiment was "I really like Windsurf. Shame if it went away." The 2.0 launch put that to rest.
Zed has passionate advocates who care about performance and openness. The Gram fork (Zed with AI stripped out) shows there's real demand for the speed without any AI. ACP collaboration with JetBrains signals ecosystem ambitions. The 1M-context Claude BYOK support was a direct response to community asks.
Kiro is early. The spec-driven approach has real fans -- "This actually feels like engineering, not fighting the tool" -- but the IDE is still buggy and slow in places, and the community is skeptical about Amazon's long-term commitment. CLI 2.0 and Opus 4.7 access suggest Amazon is still investing.
7. The Stability Question
Matters more than features if you're picking a daily driver:
- Cursor: Stable and growing. $29.3B valuation, ~$2B ARR, clear market leader. Cursor 3 is a bet, not a retreat.
- Zed: Stable. Independent, open source, community-driven. Even if the company stumbles, the code survives.
- Windsurf: Way more stable than it looked in March. Windsurf 2.0 embedded Devin into the IDE -- Cognition is investing, not winding down. $82M ARR and 350+ enterprise customers buy runway. The pricing bump is a downside for new users.
- Kiro: Early but active. Amazon-backed means funding stability. CLI 2.0 and Opus 4.7 say sustained investment. But "a good idea that becomes someone's promo and dies when they burn out and leave" is a real pattern at big tech, and I've seen it play out too many times to pretend it can't happen here.
Who Should Use What
Here's how I'd actually pick:
- Cursor if running multiple agents in parallel is your main workflow, not an occasional assist. You want the biggest ecosystem and you're fine with the Agents Window being your default surface instead of the editor. Annual billing makes it the cheapest mainstream option.
- Windsurf if you need enterprise compliance (FedRAMP, HIPAA, ZDR). You value deep context awareness and Flow Awareness more than raw iteration speed. Quota-based billing appeals to you more than Cursor's parallel-agent approach. You can live with corporate ownership risk.
- Zed if editor performance actually matters to you. You want open source and real model freedom, including Claude's 1M context window via BYOK. You care about collaboration (CRDTs, shared cursors). You want AI as a tool on top of a great editor, not the foundation of the product.
- Kiro if you build complex features that benefit from upfront design. You want structured requirements before code. You're on AWS and can use AWS Transform for migrations. You want the spec-driven bet validated by a hyperscaler -- and you're okay being on an experimental Opus 4.7 tier for now.
The CodeMySpec Angle
Kiro is the most directly relevant tool here. The EARS-notation spec generation validates the core thesis of spec-driven development, and Amazon is putting real resources behind proving the market exists. The April updates (AWS Transform in Kiro IDE, Opus 4.7 experimental) say they're not slowing down.

The "spec overhead" complaint about Kiro is legitimate. Any spec-driven tool has to handle simple tasks without friction. Specs should scale from a one-liner for a quick fix to a full requirements doc for a complex feature.
Cursor 3 reinforces the broader point: as agents move from "autocomplete on steroids" to "parallel workforce," the cost of ambiguous input goes up. You're not paying for one bad generation anymore. You're paying for eight. Clear specs get more valuable as parallelism increases, not less.
